AFCOST Training 2018-19

Cultural Proficiency is a way of being that allows individuals and organizations to interact effectively with people. It is a developmental approach for addressing the issues and opportunities that emerge in diverse environments. Our life journeys have been shaped by race and culture and often influence the way we interface with others. This workshop will provide participants with insights and tools to support increased cultural proficiency in their roles working with youth, families, and colleagues.

Learning Goals: 

• To develop a continuous learning approach that challenges us to both take personal responsibility for our cultural proficiency and our participation in creating institutional accountability for it.
• To become empowered to challenge oppression.
• To begin to see the power of denying or affirming people’s full humanity.
• To develop strategies to give and get support in this journey.

• Reflections of one definition of Cultural Proficiency  
• Models for continuous learning including a Cultural Continuum,10 C’s of Awareness and Change, Affinity Identity Groups, Peer-Peer Action Groups
• Understanding of the importance of listening to and sharing personal stories in deepening our cultural proficiency
• Understanding the historical and persistent harm done when we deny the impacts of bias and privilege
