Limited Capacity full

One out of every three Black Men are expected to go to prison in their lifetime.  More Than A Statistic: Creating Safe and Supportive Spaces for Young Men of Color , facilitated by Tyrell Dortch with Trevis Brooks from Moses Youth Center,  is an engaging and transformative workshop that will provide participants with an opportunity to create a collaborative learning experience centered around supporting young men of color. With around 70%  of Young Men of Color coming from single-family homes, it is important for youth practitioners to develop a better understanding of what these young men are carrying with them into their programs.  More Than A Statistic will help participants shift their mindsets and begin the critical conversation around the challenges that arise, while trying to create a safe space for these young men to express themselves, solve problems, and build community.

This workshop will be a space where participants can share and learn best practices while developing an understanding of the importance of team building and supportive relationships.

Learning Goals:
  • Identify some of the challenges that arise when creating safe spaces for young men of color.
  • Discuss how establishing routines, such as Community Agreements and Team-builders can help create a safe/supportive space for young men of color.
  • Identify the importance of developing best practices around mindset and supportive relationships.

"Takebacks”:
  • Shifting of the mindset to prioritize creating safe and supportive spaces for Young Men of Color
  • Heighten the collective awareness of the experiences that Young Men of Color bring into their programs
  • An Action Plan that identifies best practices in creating safe spaces for Young Men of Color

Dinner will be provided.
